How High is Pikes Peak?
This has been the subject of much speculation and discussion over the past 200 years. Without actually climbing Pikes Peak, Zebulon Pike estimated its elevation to be 18,581 feet above sea level in 1806. 53 yeas later cartographers and photographers began to make closer estimates of its elevation. The last USGS calculation, made in 2002, puts the elevation at 14,115 feet, even though many signs and tourist brochures still place it at 14,110 feet.
