Board Meeting Minutes, September 8, 2009

Forest

Attending: Michael Bartmess, Carol Beckman, Mary Burger, Mike Cotter, Barry Dolan, Steve Jennings, Eric Swab .

Meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m.

Minutes from the previous meeting were approved.

Board Discussion:

Steve has not heard anything on electrifying the restrooms at Barr Trail head.  Steve will check with Matt.

Steve reported on the Barr Trail web site.  What he is using shows the trail in the correct place.  Google Earth has the trail in the wrong place.  What he’s using is free.  Any licensing issues have been resolved.  Steve proposed putting a link on the web site and sending out e-mail about it.  Steve will compose the e-mail message, telling people the site is available and people can begin to record problems with Barr Trail.  Michael said adding a link would be easy.  Michael can also send out e-mail.  The information can also go in the newsletter.  Steve can send out the report in electronic form.

Steve received e-mail from Spencer about some logs for steps that had come loose on Barr Trail.  A tree also fell across the trail.  Eric B. responded.

Steve has not yet contacted the caterer for the annual meeting but plans to this month.  The caterer was Melting Pot.

Steve received e-mail from Lexis-Nexis requesting a work day, with possible dates.  Michael told them about the scheduled work days remaining, and also about contacts for other projects.  He pointed them to online registration.

Mary doesn’t have e-mail, so wasn’t able to send Michael the e-mails to go out about the last Saint Mary’s Falls work day and the tool cleaning day.  So she gave a paper copy to Michael to send out.  Michael offered to set up e-mail through the web site for Mary.

Mary called Qwest today about disconnecting the phone.  It should be disconnected tomorrow.

Bob Johnson sent e-mail to Mary.  He is the camporee director for the event on the Navigators’ property.  They plan to do trail work May 21-23, Friday through Sunday, 2010.  Bob is asking to borrow or rent tools from FOTP.  They’d like to open the trails for visitors.  Their trails are mainly used by people at the Navigators.  A deposit for the tools is a possibility.  The tools do wear out.  Mary proposed that we let them use the tools and talk about details.  FOTP did rent tools to the city of Colorado Springs .  WFOTP has also lent tools to El Paso County .  When they returned them, some tools were missing.  For someone we did not know, a deposit would be reasonable.  For someone we can trust, an agreement to replace tools would be appropriate.  FOTP has enough tools for about 50 to 60 people.  Bob also requested volunteer leaders.  FOTP could put a note in the newsletter and send them to Bob.  The project is not on Pikes Peak .  Navigators will allow some people on the property.  Bob would like some trail groups to set up displays to educate the adults.  Michael said he’d be willing to go, as he does for other displays.  Eric suggested that CMC might be interested.

The retreat needs to be scheduled.  Steve suggested December 5.  Funding and membership are needed topics.  Also needed are visions and programs.  January 16 is another possible date.  Mary may not be available December 5.  December 5 and January 16 present some problems for Mike C.  Mary will call Mike, 473-0158.  Steve will check into meeting at Penrose House.

Eric Swab and Mary received permission to hike across South Slope.  They found a possible connector.  There are some old roads that might be usable.  The connection could be completed on city property, so that a NEPA would not be required.

Eric S. distributed maps for trails at the top of the Incline.  One was existing trails.  What Forest Service gave Eric doesn’t make sense.  Bob’s Road is the black line on the other map.  From Eagle’s Nest down there is a trail, the red line on the other map.  Much of what FS calls 702 doesn’t exist.  623 goes down an unused extension of Longs Ranch Road and appears to follow a social trail.  It goes down the same slope that the current short cut trail goes down that we’d like to keep people off.  Eric suggests 703 for the blue line on the new map.  At the top of the incline, there are three possibilities.  The one on the left goes to a pipeline.  The middle goes to the road.  The right goes to some picnic tables and a sign that points to Eagle’s Nest, which is a set of braided social trails.  Eric would like that moved to the red line, which is a good trail to Eagle’s Nest.  Social trails exist to Rocky Mountain .  People who run the Incline regularly will want to take their usual trail down.  Casual users would take the correct trail if they knew where it was.  Education would be needed.  A sign and a good map would be worthwhile.  Eric S. will talk to Gary .

Eric wondered if the Fremont invitation went out. It did.

Mike still has t-shirts that the people did not collect.  Mary might need them for the next work day.  He will drop them off.

Mail in the post office box included a class action settlement from Edward Jones waiving fees on accounts and a notice from Update Printing that they have artwork from Eagle Graphics.

Eric B. twisted his ankle on August 20, the day Steve’s students went up to Pikes Peak .  They hiked the Crowe Gulch trail to the Ring.

We need to meet in October to plan the annual meeting.  We might need a meeting to plan the agenda for the retreat.  That might be possible via e-mail.

Meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
