Mountain Bikers Pay for Dirt

By Ramsay Rayner

This is a slight exaggeration, of course, but it is certainly true that many mountain bikers now 'pay' for the use of the dirt by working on the trails with groups like FOTP.

There is a new scheme in Colorado called 'Paydirt' that has been instituted by members of the mountain biking community and by Bicycle Colorado (www.bicyclecolo.org) to encourage more riders to participate in trail maintenance and advocacy.

Paydirt targets riders who compete in the Mountain States Cup mountain bike race series, and allows those who can demonstrate that they have completed a day's trail work to get 'free' points in the competition.

Of course, FOTP workdays are a perfect way to earn MSC credits. Mountain bikers who wish to take advantage of the work they do for FOTP should ask the organizer of any FOTP workday to sign their Paydirt form (available at the Bicycle Colorado site). Please also encourage friends or family from the fat tire fraternity to come along and work with us next year - they would be very welcome.
