Pondering Pikes PeakBy Mary Burger In the days following September 11th, I found myself needing to get away. I was fortunate, in that I had the time, and I live here. I hiked and thought, and hiked some more. What a tremendous asset, Pikes Peak is. We are so lucky to live in its shadow. I hope you were able to find solace there as well. These events cement for me, the importance of access to the wild and quiet places on the Peak. I met few people the days immediately after the 11th. But by the weekend, it seemed more people than usual were out. Hikers, bicyclist, motor cyclists, all seemed somehow friendlier, more human, more patient with each other. I hope this change lasts. It is time we spoke of the things of the heart. We all love the mountain. We can all live in peace at its foot. We must learn to share, and be patient as others love what we love. There is good news afoot for next year. We will be building some of the connections for the Ring the Peak Trail. If you have an evening a month between now and spring, and want to be involved in the planning and organizing of this work call the office, at (719) 471-3145 or visit our web site to find out when and where to find the next committee or board meeting. We had a great year this year. Read more reports on fieldwork and activities inside. Hope to see you on the mountain. |
