Pondering Pikes Peak

By Mary Burger

The recent census figures are no surprise. We are now officially over half a million strong. I am sure we all know this intuitively, but the numbers make it unmistakable. For anyone who enjoys the out of doors, this only means there is more pressure than ever on the trails on Pikes Peak.

I am told, Colorado Springs is the largest metropolitan area contiguous with a national forest. Because we live so close, we have access to this wonderful heritage. It is ours to enjoy. We also have the responsibility to treat this resource with respect and ensure it passes to the next generation in good repair. This is the essence of Stewardship, and it is the founding principle of Friends of the Peak.

This year, we continue our work with the public land agencies who manage Pikes Peak to ensure sound stewardship of our mountain. We will host trail maintenance days, and native plant restoration projects. We will sponsor field trips for those interested in the improvements along the Pikes Peak Highway, and to see the South Slope watershed and better understand the conservation efforts taking place there.

To register for activities, please head over to the 2001 projects page. See you on the mountain.
