Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Building new trails in Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Cheyenne Mountain State Park trail work

By Mary Burger

What to do? What to do? That was certainly the question on many lips when the forest closed on June 9th. Based on your input at the annual meeting last year, Cheyenne Mountain State Park is part of Pikes Peak, and therefore falls under our stewardship. We made some calls and accelerated the plan, which would have FOTP build some of the new trails at our new state park. The park is due to open in 2003. To meet that schedule, they need to complete at least the inner loop of trails.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park was the JL Ranch. It sits just south of Colorado Springs at the base of Cheyenne Mountain and west of Fort Carson. The trails are planned for pedestrian and bicycles. Due to the fragile nature of the soil, horses will probably not be allowed.

We moved our scheduled workday, July 13th, from the Ring to Cheyenne Mountain State Park. 18 people got a sneak peak at our new state park. And, we built a thousand feet of trail too.
