Ring the Peak workdays

Building new trails in on Mt. Ester

Mt. Ester trail work

By Mary Burger

The first weekend in June saw about 2 dozen Friends of the Peak breaking new trail on the Ring the Peak. Although we did not complete the section between the existing Mt. Ester trail and the North Slope recreational area, we did complete almost a quarter of a mile this year. The whole segment is a mile in length. Next year, we will hit it again. Hopefully, we won’t lose half our workdays to a forest closure. Hopefully, we will have as many or more dedicated Friends to help make this connection a reality.

Special mention should be made of our new crew leaders Patrick Sieders and Vince Schurtz. Although they were promised “basic trail” during training, they each had sections which required walls to be built. That is not exactly basic by anyone’s definition. Both rose to the occasion and completed beautiful sections of trail.

Although the trail does not yet connect, you can visit as much as is done, and admire the great work. Take the Mt. Ester Trail to the Utility easement. Follow the utility easement uphill. The new trail takes off to the right, (approximately N) from the easement. It is marked by an informal cairn. Please do not attempt to follow the flags beyond the built portion of trail. That will only make it more difficult to build later.
