Pondering Pikes Peak

By Mary Burger

After long waiting, and some hard work, we are finally ready to turn the first ‘pulaski’ for the “Ring the Peak” trail. This is an enormous undertaking. The only reason I am so bold, as to begin the attempt, is that I know you are all here to support this effort.

Take a look at our impressive summer schedule. We need your help. If you have experience in trail building, please consider becoming a crew leader. Otherwise, come join us for one or more trail days as a volunteer or as a project host. A good time will be had by all, and you may learn something about our mountain.

The Forest Service informs me they will soon be holding public input sessions on the Gold Camp Road issue. As most of you know, the Gold Camp Road was closed at tunnel #3 some years ago. There is a group of people who would like to raise the money to re-open the road, and another group of people who like the road the way it is without any traffic. At the master plan, we did not come to consensus on this issue. The road is currently open to motorcycles, and ATVs, as there is a by-pass over the defunct tunnel. But, many would like to see the tunnel restored for historical reasons. At the membership meeting, you voted to speak out in favor of keeping the road as a non-motorized route. We’ll let you know when the public meetings take place, probably later this summer.

See you on the mountain.
