Who is FOTP?

The mission of Friends of the Peak is to ensure sound stewardship of Pikes Peak. We are dedicated to protecting, restoring and appreciating Pikes Peak, and educating people about mountain environments. Since our inception in 1995, we have built several sediment-trapping devices and restored the native alpine tundra below them. Friends of the Peak has built new trail, and begun the arduous task of restoring existing trail on Pikes Peak. We regularly maintain Barr Trail, (currently the only hiking trail to the summit of Pikes Peak). The organization has sponsored seminars and field trips. We collaborated with many agencies and other groups to create a Multi-Use Master Plan for Pikes Peak in 1999, and have adopted that Master Plan as a sound management policy for Pikes Peak.

The highest priority of the Master Plan is the creation of a trail around Pikes Peak, with four spokes to the summit. We call this the “Ring the Peak” system. About 80% of the system exists. It requires only a few connecting pieces to be complete. This year, we begin to build the missing pieces of the “Ring,” and with the help of VOC, we will build the most technical portion of the western approach to the summit of Pikes Peak.

Membership is not required to participate. Visit our web site at www.fotp.com to register, or call us at (719) 471-3145 to request a schedule. We need crew leaders, volunteers, and project hosts.
