Volunteer Opportunities from 2010

2010 Project Recap

Below is the list if projects completed in the 2010 project season thanks to a strong turnout from our member volunteers.

Trail Evaluation Training
Friends of the Peak trained volunteers on the evaluation of trails, assessing problem areas on the trail and implementing corrective measures.  Volunteers not only learned the theory, but also put it into practice in this two part training.

Wed, May 5     Trail Evaluation Training 1
Sat, May 8       Trail Evaluation Training 2

Buffalo Creek Trail
Also known as the St. Mary's Falls Trail, this trail is close to downtown and easily accessible for everyone.  Maintenance on the trail was neglected for 30 years which has created a unique opportunity to improve a great trail.  Friends of the Peak began work on this trail last year and were able to complete the first 1.25 miles.  The remaining sections of trail were generally in good shape but need work to improve drainage and to reduce the grade to reduce further rutting.  The trailhead was accessed via the closed section of Gold Camp Road and work was conducted every other Thursday throughout the summer of 2010.

            June 3rd -             Buffalo Creek Trail 1

September 9th  -  Buffalo Creek Trail 8

Barr Trail
Barr Trail is probably the most used trail in the Pikes Peak Region.  Friends of the Peak continued its ongoing efforts to address drainage and grade issues on the Barr trail.  In addition, Friends of the Peak worked with volunteers to provide regular maintenance on the trail.

         Sat, Aug 7th —    Barr Trail 1
         Sun, Aug 8th —   Barr Trail 2

Maintenance Hikes
In an ongoing basis to ensure that all existing trails are well maintained, Friends of the Peak began offering maintenance hikes on existing trails during the 2010 project season.  The goal of these hikes was to hike the trail, or sections of it, while documenting major areas to be addressed later and fixing minor issues as they were discovered.

Sat, July 24th —  Maintenance Hike on Seven Bridges Trail

Sat, Aug 14th —  Maintenance Hike on Barr Trail

Devil's Playground Trail to Summit
This workday was on the last section of this trail in its approach to the summit of Pikes Peak .  The trail winds through a boulder field and the trail was not well defined.  This caused confusion for hikers approaching the summit from the west.  Friends of the Peak worked to correct alignment problems and make sure the trail is clearly marked.

        Sat, Aug 28th — Devil's Playground Trail

South Slope Projects
The South Slope of Pikes Peak has been closed to recreation for 100 years. On August 21st and September 11th 2010 FOTP hosted trail building work days on the South Slope.

Sat, Aug 21st — South Slope Project 1
Sat  Sep 11th — South Slope Project 2
