Volunteer Opportunities for 2011

Project Leader Training

Friends of The Peak will train volunteers on leading a project through assuming responsibility for the project, planning the day, gathering resources for the project and making the day fun for all volunteers.

       Thursday, March 10     Project Leader Training (6:00 PM – location to be announced)


Crew Leader Training

Friends of The Peak will train volunteers on leading a crew to build new trail.  This training covers sustainable trail building principals, low impact trail construction and tool usage.  Volunteers not only learned the theory, but also put it into practice in this two part training.

Trail Evaluation Training

Friends of The Peak trains volunteers on the evaluation of trails, assessing problem areas on the trail and implementing corrective measures.  Volunteers not only learned the theory, but also put it into practice in this two part training.

Section 16

Friends of The Peak is partnering with the Colorado Mountain Club and Colorado Springs Park and Recreation to make improvements in the Section 16 open space.  This work will be focused on building technical structures in Section 16 to help with drainage, trail alignment and correcting problem areas.  The work will go on throughout the summer of 2011.

Barr Trail

Barr Trail is probably the most used trail in the Pikes Peak Region.  Friends of the Peak will continue its ongoing efforts to address drainage and grade issues on the Barr trail.  In addition, Friends of the Peak will work with volunteers to provide regular maintenance on the trail.  The May 21st date will be done in conjunction with the Trail Evaluation training, but you do not have to attend the May 19th date to attend this workday.

Maintenance and Signing Hikes

In an ongoing basis to ensure that all existing trails are well maintained and signed, Friends of the Peak is offering maintenance and signing hikes on existing trails during the 2011 project season.  The goal of these hikes is to hike the trail, or sections of it, while documenting major areas to be addressed later and fixing minor issues as they were discovered.

South Slope Projects

The South Slope of Pikes Peak has been closed to recreation for 100 years. These days will be to build new trail on the South Slope.  The August 21st and 22nd dates are being help in conjunction with Volunteers Outdoors Colorado and will allow for camping overnight in an area close to the South Slope.
